Bridge Bi-National Scholarship begins

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (January 17, 2011) -The Student Financial Services Office has received donation[s] totalling $100,000 courtesy of Bridge Inc. [and provincial support].

Today, Donald Gerrie, Peter Nixon and Gerry McGuire [retired Sault College president], the three founding members of Bridge Inc., met at the college to present a cheque to Dr. McLain, Lake Superior State University president, and Dr. Common, Sault College president.

After meeting, the committee also spent time selecting the very first recipient of the Bridge Bi-National Scholarship.

The bursary will be presented this March at the 2012 Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards ceremony to a graduating student from Sault College that is continuing their education at Lake Superior State University.

To apply, applicants needed to submit a resume demonstrating their leadership abilities, active volunteerism, and a contribution to student life.

Furthermore, applicants were interviewed by a Selection Committee consisting of one person from Sault College as selected by the president, one person from Lake Superior State University as selected by their president, and a community representative as selected by the other two committee members that alternate between Canada and U.S.

The Bridge Bi-National Scholarship [was] eligible for 3:1 matching by the Ontario government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support program, bringing the total principal for this award to $100,000.

“Having such substantial scholarships and awards for our students allows us to support the success of more of our students,” states Terry Ableson, financial aid administrator. “This is a significant donation due to the participation of both post-secondary institutions. Thank you to Bridge Inc. for their continued support of Sault College students.”

Sault College is very grateful to all our generous donors to the Scholarship, Bursary and Awards program.

For information on how to donate, please contact Terry Ableson at 705-759-2554, ext. 2714.

All students are reminded to check the financial aid website for up-to-date information about scholarship offerings, application dates and requirements.
