Fedeli urges action on fishing & hunting licence fumbles

NORTH BAY – Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is reiterating a call for the Minister of Natural Resources to intervene in the current fiasco regarding issuance of fishing and hunting licences.

Fedeli’s colleague, PC Natural Resources Critic Laurie Scott (Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock) has written to Minister Michael Gravelle urging action.

On January 1, the ministry moved to an electronic licensing system, ending the system of manual licences, which have traditionally been issued by outdoor retailers in every community.

Problems and delays with the rollout, however, mean very few outlets have been able to issue licences.

Operators using the new system also claim it is not user-friendly, is cumbersome and time consuming.

People wanting a license have been encouraged to order theirs online through the MNR website.

But the MNR seems to be several weeks behind in issuing licenses for people who ordered online.

Meanwhile, MPPs across Ontario, including Fedeli, have had complaints from constituents frustrated with the new licensing system.

“This mess is unacceptable at a time when the ice fishing season in Northern Ontario – critical to winter tourism – is getting into full swing,” said Fedeli.

“I urge the minister to extend the issuance of manual licences until such time as these problems are solved.”
