Armed Robbery at Savoy’s Jewellers

Officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Investigations Unit, Patrol Services and the Emergency Services Unit arrested 27 year-old Micheal Dustin Burgess of Chilliwack, British Columbia (no fixed address) last night at 183 Albert Street East in relation to the armed robbery at Savoy’s Jewellers. 

It is alleged that on the 11th of January at approximately 4:28 p.m. the accused attended at Savoy’s Jewellers at 290 Queen Street East, gave the clerk a bag and demanded it be filled with watches from the display case. 

The accused made motions indicating that he had a weapon in the waistband of his pants and the employee ran to the back of the store to alert other staff members.

The accused fled the store empty handed with a staff member in pursuit.

The foot chase proceeded into the alleyway from Queen Street towards Dennis Street. 

During the pursuit, the accused pulled a handgun from his pants and fired approximately four shots at the staff member. 

The pursuit continued and the accused was observed running into the apartment building at the corner of Dennis Street and Albert Street East. 

The residence was contained by the Emergency Services Unit and Patrol Services. 

The Investigation Unit continued the investigation and the accused was later arrested later without further incident. 

There were no injuries reported during the incident.   

At the time of his arrest, the accused was found in possession of a small amount of cocaine. 

As a result he has been charged with one count of robbery with a firearm and one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. 

Further charges are pending and he is to appear in bail court this morning.
