Green Circle Environmental, a new firm formed by two Sault companies, is expected to win a major contract tonight to handle the Sault's recycling program for the next 10 years.

The new company, comprised of Sault Ste. Marie Disposal and Brandes Aggregates, intends to build a new municipal recycling facility at 2125 Great Northern Road.

Green Circle was selected over two other bidders, Canadian Waste Services Inc. and Municipal Waste and Recycling Consultants.

Four new trucks

The company will buy new equipment for processing recyclables, as well as four 2003 recycling trucks.

Tonight, Sault Council will be asked to award the $170-a-tonne contract to Green Circle, conditional on negotiating an appropriate agreement.

It's difficult to predict the annual cost of the contract to taxpayers because Green Circle will be paid according to how much material is collected.

Next year, the contract is expected to cost the City somewhere between $519,120 and $778,680.

That would be $87,550 to $347,110 higher than the current cost.

Beyond 2003, the cost of the contract is expected to rise about eight percent a year.
