John Febbraro, industrial marketing co-ordinator for the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corp., is one of five Saultites who'll leave Nov. 7 on the first phase of what the EDC hopes will become a full-fledged trade mission to Italy.

Febbraro (shown at last night's City Council meeting with Bruce Strapp, EDC president and chief executive officer) expects to be accompanied by lawyers Gerry Nori and Frank Sarlo, business development advisor Doug Clute and Algoma University College language professor Vince Mancinelli.

The City has applied for FedNor funding for the Italian initiative.

Nori, Sarlo and Clute are expected to pay their own ways on the initial "exploratory" trip, intended to "reconnoiter and examine the feasibility of the larger event."

Febbraro and Mancinelli will have their costs paid by the EDC.

During last night's Council discussions about the initiative, Mayor John Rowswell declared a conflict of interest because one of his business clients, China Steel, has an interest in the trip. The Mayor is the welding engineer for the steel fabricator.

Parking tickets will cost more

City Council also hiked the cost of some parking tickets by 50 percent, and plugged a legal loophole that allowed visitors to the Civic Centre to park in employee parking spots. Details. We do news differently
