Crash north of Wawa leads to impaired charges for Sault driver

WAWA – Police say a driver from the Sault faces impaired charges after a single-vehicle crash last night north of Wawa.

According to the Superior East OPP, shortly after 10 p.m. police were notified of a collision on Highway 519 near Highway 17.  

Through investigation, officers determined the vehicle's driver had consumed alcohol, according to an OPP news release.

Daniel MacPhail, 26, of Sault Ste. Marie was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Wawa on June 10.

The accused's driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days, police said.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and MacPhail is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
