Meet the new Thunderbirds women's curling coach

Algoma University and the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program are pleased to announce that Josh Porco is the newest Head Coach of the women’s OUA and CIS varsity curling team.

“We are very pleased to have Josh Porco join the Algoma Thunderbirds program as Head Coach of the women’s curling team,” said Mark Kontulainen, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Algoma University. “Josh has plenty of experience in curling and brings his wealth of knowledge to the Algoma Thunderbirds program. Josh will help the women’s curling team achieve great success.”

Josh Porco has 11 years of curling experience.

From Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Porco has been the Drawmaster and Learn to Curl Coach with Western University in London, Ontario. While in London, Porco was also the Junior Program Coordinator of the London Curling Club.

With the Soo Curlers Association, Porco has been the Provincial Bantam Curling Coach.

Before graduating from Algoma University’s Bachelor of Business Administration program in June 2015, Porco led the Algoma Thunderbirds men’s curling coach as skip in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

He holds a Level 1 and 2 Coaching Certification.

The Algoma Thunderbirds curling teams’ seasons begin in January of 2015 and the teams practice at the Soo Curlers Association.
