OUA Soccer season opens for Algoma

The 2015 Ontario University Athletics soccer season got underway for Algoma University over the weekend with a tie and a loss for the men’s team and a pair of losses for the women’s team.

The 2015 Ontario University Athletics soccer season got underway for Algoma University over the weekend with a tie and a loss for the men’s team and a pair of losses for the women’s team.

On Saturday, Mohammed Alsurahi scored for the Algoma men in a 1-1 tie to open the weekend. Leonardo Leone scored for Laurier.

On Sunday, the men fell 4-0 to Laurier to end the weekend.

Niklas Bauer scored twice for Laurier in the win.

The women’s team dropped an 18-1 decision to Laurier on Saturday to open the season.

Taylor Bellini had the lone goal for Algoma while Nicole Lyon pace Laurier with four goals in the win. Emily Brown added three goals and Julie Karn, Sarah Farano, Katie Bishop and Jacky Normandeau chipped in with two goals each.

Sunday saw the women drop a 15-0 decision to Laurier to end the weekend. Lyon and Natalie Barry had three goals each for Laurier while Brown, Gegan Perher and Abbey Zamec added two goals each.

The Algoma soccer teams are back in action on Sept. 5 when they host the Western Mustangs at Superior Heights. The women’s game is set for 1 p.m. with the men to follow at 3:15 p.m. Algoma and Western will meet again on Sunday, also at Superior Heights with the women up at noon and the men taking to the field at 2:13 p.m.
