Murray named top female athlete

Just 24 hours after Natasha Doroodian was named Sault Ste. Marie’s H.P. Broughton Trophy winner as sportsperson of the year and Mark McLean (Superior Heights) earned top male athlete honours, the top female high school athletes were recognized.

Just 24 hours after Natasha Doroodian was named Sault Ste. Marie’s H.P. Broughton Trophy winner as sportsperson of the year and Mark McLean (Superior Heights) earned top male athlete  honours, the top female high school athletes were recognized.

Wednesday night saw Lydia Murray of St. Mary’s win the Percy Bedford Award as Sault Ste. Marie’s top female high school athlete at the 42nd annual Tenaris A.C.T. Athletic Awards Banquet.

The award also comes with a $1,000 bursary.

Murray competed in four sports – basketball, volleyball, soccer and track-and-field – during her time at St. Mary’s and also earned top honours in volleyball on Wednesday night.

The other nominees for the Percy Bedford Award included Olivia Bruni (White Pines), Danielle Shewfelt (Notre-Dame-du-Sault), Andrea St. Jules (Superior Heights), Sarah VanBoerdonk (Korah), and Mercedes Ryan (St. Basil).

The other volleyball nominees were St. Jules, VanBoerdonk, Ryan, Chase Sewel (White Pines) and Faye Royal (Notre-Dame-du-Sault).

The Harvey Morrison Award winners were Victoria Corbett (Superior Heights), Taylor Smith (White Pines), Choraline Burton (Notre-Dame-du-Sault) and Mackenzie Mazzuca.

Lydia Heimonen of Superior Heights took the cross-country award while the other nomineesi ncluded Erin Lee (Korah), Caelan Nadeau (White Pines) and Kara Neveau (St. Mary’s).

Korah’s Tori Ivey earned top honours in basketball.

Bruni, Murray, Autumn Brule (Superior Heights) and Emma Fillion (St. Basil) were also nominated in basketball.

The doubles team of Carina Hargis and Audrey Steele of Korah took the badminton award.

In badminton, the other nominees were St. Jules, Serena Pulente (St. Mary’s), Natasha Dobson (White Pines) and Samantha Battagin (St. Basil).

The soccer winner was Lauren Rimmer of St. Mary’s while St. Jules, VanBoerdonk, Sara Duguay (White Pines) and Mackenzie Monico (St. Basil) were also nominated.

Rebekah Trudell (Superior Heights) took the wrestling honour while Paula Brzezinski (Korah), and Mikayla Huckerby (White Pines) were also nominated.

Alicia Simbirski (Korah) was named the top curler while Brooke Boissoneau of White Pines and Katie Rutledge of Superior Heights were also nominated.

Taryn Lamorie of St. Basil took the track-and-field honour.

The track-and-field nominees were Heimonen, Rimmer, Sewell, Taylor Elliott (Korah) and Christiane Boudreau (Notre-Dame-du-Sault).
