The Soo Greyhounds have received their first commitment from a player drafted in the 2015 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.

The team announced on Friday morning that defenceman Anthony Demeo has signed with the organization.

A native of Port Washington, NY, Demeo was selected in the third round of the draft in April from the New Jersey Rockets minor midget team.

In 25 games with the team, Demeo scored a goal and 16 points.

“I am extremely excited because I was fortunate enough to get drafted to the team that was number one on my list of teams I wanted to go to,” Demeo said in a release, “and that made the decision to commit so easy. I can’t wait to get to Sault Ste. Marie and become part of the community and the Greyhounds.”

The 6-foot, 188-pound blueliner participated in the US National Team Development Program’s U17 camp in March and also took part in the OHL’s Gold Cup in early-May in Kitchener.

“Anthony had a lot of options in terms of what his next steps would be in his academic and hockey career,” said Greyhounds General Manager Kyle Raftis.

“With his ability to push the pace from the blue line with his skating, combined with his size, we are very excited to be part of Anthony’s future hockey and academic successes.”

Demeo will now take part in the Greyhounds annual training camo which is set to begin in late-August.
