CHL Playoff Roundup: Generals win OHL title

The Oshawa Generals have won the Ontario Hockey League title. The Generals beat the Erie Otters 5-2 on Friday night to win the best-of-7 OHL championship in five games.

The Generals beat the Erie Otters 5-2 on Friday night to win the best-of-7 OHL championship in five games.

The Generals used three goals in the second period, two on the power play, to take a 4-1 lead over the Otters and held on for the victory.

The Generals got goals from six different players in the game. Hunter Smith and Michael McCarron had a goal and an assist each while Bradley Latour, Matt Mistele, Sam Harding and Aidan Wallace also scored. Cole Cassels assisted on four goals for Oshawa.

Ken Appleby stopped 30 shots for the Generals.

Nick Betz and Darren Raddysh completed the Otters scoring. Devin Williams got the start in goal for the Otters, stopping nine shots before being pulled after the Generals fourth goal. Daniel Dekoning stopped 12 shots in relief.

Otters forward Connor McDavid was named the playoff most valuable player after posting 21 goals and 49 points in 20 games.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League final also continued on Friday night as the Quebec Remparts beat the Rimouski Oceanic 3-2 in overtime to take a 3-2 series lead.

Massimo Carozza scored 10 seconds into overtime for the Remparts while Adam Erne had a pair of goals for Quebec. Goaltender Zach Fucale made 34 saves.

Christopher Clapperton and Jan Kostalek had a goal and an assist each for the Oceanic while goaltender Louis-Philip Guindon made 23 saves.

The series continues on Sunday afternoon with game six in Quebec City.

The Western Hockey League final wrapped up on Wednesday night as the Kelowna Rockets beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 3-0, wrapping up a four-game sweep in the process.

Leon Draisaitl and Rourke Chartier had a goal and an assist each for the Rockets in the series-clinching win while goaltender Jackson Whistle made 19 saves for the shutout. Nick Merkley also scored for Kelowna.

Brandon goaltender Jordan Papirney stopped 27 shots.

The Rockets advance to the Memorial Cup where they will open the tournament on day one when they face the host-Quebec Remparts.

The second game of the tournament will feature the Oceanic, who have already clinched a spot in the tournament as they face the host-Remparts in the QMJHL final, and the Generals.

CHL NOTES

In other Canadian Hockey League news, former Soo Greyhounds assistant coach Danny Flynn seems poised to become the next head coach of the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs.

According to a report on Thursday by Stephane Leroux of RDS, Quebec’s all-sports television network, Flynn will take over for Ross Yates, who resigned from the post at the end of the season. The Sea Dogs have yet to confirm the report.

Flynn, who served as an assistant coach under Ted Nolan with the Buffalo Sabres this season, coached the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats from 2007 to 2013.

In other news, the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s announced on Friday that Coach Jeff Brown will also take on the position as the 67’s general manager, effective immediately.

Brown signed a multi-year contract with the team.
