Hockey Notebook: High school hockey regular season winding down

High School Hockey action continued this week. On Sunday night, Dom Gervasi had a pair of goals while Michael Chilelli picked up the shutout as St. Basil blanked Superior Heights 8-0.

On Sunday night, Dom Gervasi had a pair of goals while Michael Chilelli picked up the shutout as St. Basil blanked Superior Heights 8-0. Matt Keenan, Mike Cicchelli, Marcus Sacchetta, Trent Sepkowski, Jonny Hammond and Colton Read also had goals in the win. Sepkowski also set up a pair of goals for St. Basil.

The week’s schedule included a pair of games on Thursday night.

Noah Sartoretto and Erik Paradis scored twice each to lead St. Mary’s to a 9-1 win over Superior Heights. Daniel Cicchini, Mitchel Robinson, Mike Fabbro, Jake Lewis and Connor Boudreau also scored for St. Mary’s. Jeff Auger had the lone goal for Superior Heights.

Thursday’s other game saw St. Basil beat White Pines 8-0. Keenan scored three times for St. Basil while Gervasi chipped in with a pair of goals in the win. Jonathon Vernelli, Trevor Boston and Cicchelli also scored in the win.

In high school hockey on Wednesday, St. Mary’s skated to a 6-1 win over Superior Heights. Dallas Jollineau scored three times for St. Mary’s and assisted on another goal in the win. Jason Uhl, Nicholas Brunetta and Connor Boudreau also scored for St. Mary’s.

The high school hockey league continues its schedule on Monday with a pair of games. St. Mary’s faces Korah at the McMeeken while White Pines meets Superior Heights at the John Rhodes. Both games are 3:30 p.m. starts.

BATCHEWANA ATTACK

The Batchewana Attack played a pair of games last week, which included a 1-0 win on Saturday night against the Kalkaska Rhinos in Canadian International Hockey League action.

Brian Stack scored the lone goal of the contest with just over two minutes remaining in regulation time to give the Attack the victory. Goaltender Stefan Demetz stopped 21 shots for the shutout.

Kalkaska goaltender Austin Hannaford stopped 48 shots in the loss. Hannaford was on loan to the Rhinos from Espanola after Kalkaska’s regular starting goaltender was injured the previous night in Espanola.

On Tuesday night the Attack pick up a 7-0 win over Espanola. Chris Lindsay made 20 saves for the shutout. Rob DeLury led the way offensively for the Attack with three goals. Darian Pilon, Chris Zajac, Nate Harris and Grant Syrette also scored for Batchewana in the win.

SOO THUNDERBIRDS MIDGETS

The Soo Thunderbirds wrapped up the home portion of their Great North Midget League schedule on Saturday night with a 6-1 win over the Kapuskasing Flyers.

Matt MacKay scored three times for the Thunderbirds in the win and also set up a goal for the Thunderbirds. Jason Bednarski chipped in with a pair of goals for the locals. Cameron Elsby had a goal and two assists for the Thunderbirds.

Chad Robert scored for the Flyers in the loss.

The Thunderbirds were in action on the road earlier in the week, dropping a 5-2 decision to the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves on Wednesday night.

Alex Morin and Brendan Gillis scored for the Thunderbirds in the loss.

Eric Paquette scored twice for the Wolves in the win, which saw the home team scored a pair of empty net goals in the final 90 seconds of the contest.

Jake Stos, Alex Guido and Austin Burke also scored for Sudbury while Anthony Pelletier set up two goals in the win.

SOO EAGLES

It was a tough return home for the North American Hockey League’s Soo Eagles over the weekend as they suffered a sweep at the hands of the Janesville Jets.

On Friday night, Janesville broke open a 2-1 game with four second-period goals in a 6-1 win.

Brandon Schultz had two goals and an assist for Janesville in the win while Zach Lavalle and Cullen Munson added a goal and an assist each for the Jets. Adam Winborg and Kevin Dineen also scored in the win. Zach Yoder and Adam Roeder set up two goals each for Janesville.

Brad Pung had the lone goal for the Eagles in Friday’s loss.

Janesville capped off the sweep with a 6-4 win on Saturday night. Schultz had another three-point night in the win, again potting a pair of goals and an assist for Janesville. Lavalle, Mitch Fossier and Drew Callin had a goal and an assist each in Saturday’s win. Dineen had the other Jets goal.

Denver Pierce had a goal and an assist for the Eagles in Sunday’s loss. Keegen Miller added two assists while Pung, Sandis Zolmanis and Matt Menta also scored for the Eagles.
