Six local cadets from the army cadets earned silver medals and will be competing in the Provincial Cadet Biathlon in Sault Ste Marie in two weeks.

Austin Olar, Brandon Riggs, Bryce Vanderburg who are cadets with the 2310 Army Cadets skied and shot well in the Male 3 x 4.5 km Relay Race at Sundays Race.

Also from the 2310, Kaylee-Ann Marcil, Cassandra Breckinridge, Maelyn Doxtater-Jolin earned Silver in Sundays Female 3 x 4.5 km Relay Race and will also compete in two weeks.

In Saturday's Cadet Male Senior 7.5 Km Race Austin Olar and Bryce Vanderburg placed first and second respectively.

26 Cadets from the Algoma area, of which seventeen are Sea, Army and Air cadets from Sault Ste Marie and nine from the Blind River and Elliot Lake area.

Felicity Hawkins received the Spirit Award for her perseverance in not giving in, digging deep to find the energy to finish the race.

Alex Shay who is a coach with the 2310 Army Cadets won the top coaches award.

He has previously raced as a cadet in and has gone on and competed in World Cup Biathlon.

There were 100 cadets competing this weekend at the Algoma Rod and Gun Club in this Olympic-style competition which consist of cross-country skiing 1-2 km loops through the challenging terrain of Sault Ste Marie and shooting .22-calibre rifles at falling-plate targets in the range stadium.

The biathlon training and competition promotes physical fitness and acts as a catalyst for fitness programming while promoting safe handling of rifles.

Sea, Army and Air Cadets were representing communities in the Western, and Eastern parts of Northern Ontario.

These cadets traveled from locations as far as Thunder Bay and area as well as the Pembroke area to compete in this competition.

The top cadet teams and individuals of this event will compete again in Sault Ste Marie on February 7 and 8 in the Regional Competition which will be for top awards in the Province of Ontario.
