Thunderbirds winning streak snapped

The Soo Thunderbirds had their four-game winning streak snapped on Friday night. Cole Hepler’s goal at 1:47 of overtime gave the Elliot Lake Wildcats a 6-5 win over the Thunderbirds in Elliot Lake.

Cole Hepler’s goal at 1:47 of overtime gave the Elliot Lake Wildcats a 6-5 win over the Thunderbirds in Elliot Lake.

Hepler finished the night with two goals and an assist for the Wildcats in the win.

Nicholas Legualt had a goal and three assists for Elliot Lake while Alex MacKenzie set up three goals. Aaron Carmichael had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats while Nate Sepeda and Shane Woolsey also scored in the win.

Elliot Lake goaltender A.J. Smith stopped 28 shots.

Boris Katchouk led the Thunderbirds offensively with two goals and an assist. Matt Busby, Brett Jeffries and Matt Caruso chipped in with a goal and an assist each. David Radke had two assists. Thunderbirds goaltender Mario Culina stopped 20 shots in the loss.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Jan. 23 when they host the Powassan Voodoos in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Essar Centre. The following night they host the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
