Thunderbirds pick up three of four points

In a battle between the Thunderbirds and second-place Kirkland Lake Gold Miners, the two teams remain first and second in the league standings with the Thunderbirds holding a two-point edge over the Gold Miners.

Matt MacKay, Matt Pinder and Anthony Miller scored for the Thunderbirds while veteran netminder Brian Kment made 25 saves.

Zach Pease, Jeremy Picard-Fiset and Luc Soares scored for Kirkland Lake. Goaltender Josh Erickson made 22 saves.

Thanks to four unanswered goals, the Thunderbirds picked up a 6-3 win over the Powassan Voodoos at the Essar Centre on Friday night.

The Voodoos took a 3-2 lead early in the second period before the Thunderbirds scored four unanswered goals, including three in the second period, to pick up the win.

Joey Miller and Caleb Boman each scored twice for the Thunderbirds in the win. Matt Pinder and Brett Jeffries chipped in with a goal and an assist in the win while Eric Hillock set up two goals for the Thunderbirds.

Goaltender Brian Kment stopped 25 shots for the Thunderbirds.

Steve Harland and Kyle Moore had a goal and an assist each for the Voodoos. Jake Staples also scored in the loss.

Powassan goaltender Matt Young made 34 saves in the loss.

With the win and tie, the Thunderbirds record sits at 28-4-1-5 while Kirkland Lake is 28-6-2-2.

Next up for the Thunderbirds is a home game on Thursday night when they host the Cochrane Crunch. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the John Rhodes.
