The Soo Greyhounds ran their winning streak to six games on Thursday night.

The Greyhounds beat the Peterborough Petes 7-3 in Ontario Hockey League at the Memorial Centre in Peterborough.

The Greyhounds opened up a 4-1 lead in the win before the Petes made things close, cutting the Greyhounds lead to 4-3 in the latter stages of the second period. The Greyhounds would eventually seal the win with three goals in the final period.

“It was a very frustrating game,” said Greyhounds coach Sheldon Keefe. “It was one where we started out extremely well and were in complete control of the game. Then it seemed that we got in such control that our guys went into sleep mode and checked out mentally. We just didn’t play smart hockey.”

“We took very uncharacteristic penalties which is usually a symptom of not being sharp mentally,” Keefe added. “We got very sloppy with the puck and we got very sloppy with our line changes. It was a very frustrating win.”

Sergey Tolchinsky led the way offensively with two goals and an assist for the Greyhounds while Keigan Goetz chipped in with a pair of goals. Jean Dupuy added a goal and an assist. Jared McCann and Darnell Nurse also scored. Michael Bunting and Colton White set up two goals each.

“We showed what we already know in that we’re a team that can score goals,” said Keefe. “But we also showed what we already know and that’s this is a team that doesn’t always play the most intelligent hockey when they have leads and that’s a work in progress for us.”

Goaltender Joseph Raaymakers got the start for the Greyhounds and stopped 28 shots.

Dominik Masin, Nick Ritchie and Connor Boland scored for Peterborough in the loss while goaltender Dylan Wells stopped 32 shots.

The road trip continues for the Greyhounds on Friday night as they make their lone trip to Ottawa to take on the 67’s.
