High School Roundup: Football season underway

The first week of action in the local high school football league is complete after five games, three at the senior level and two at the junior level. In senior action, the season opened as Superior Heights beat St. Basil 21-1 on Wednesday night.

Jeff Auger ran the ball in from 25 yards out while Austin Maccarone (25 yards) and Jared Coombs (five yards) also had rushing touchdowns for Superior Heights.

On Friday night St. Mary’s blanked White Pines 42-0. Jason Thibodeau scored three touchdowns on runs of 64, 13 and three yards for St. Mary’s. Kyle Laurin added a pair of touchdown on runs of 24 and five yards. Shane White had the other major for St. Mary’s on a 31-yard catch.

The final senior game of the week saw Superior Heights pick up their second victory of the week with a 35-14 win over Korah. Auger scored on a six-yard run while Max Fisher scored on a 34-yard run. Craig Daniel (16 yards) and Cam Elgie (11 yards) had touchdown catches for Superior Heights. Noah Spina kicked a 19-yard field goal in the win. Nick Nicoletta (two-yard run) and Avery Ciotti (20 yard catch) had the Korah touchdowns in the loss.

In junior action, St. Mary’s opened the season on Tuesday night with a 29-6 win over White Pines while Korah beat Superior Heights 21-6 on Saturday.

In week two action at the junior level, Superior Heights faces St. Mary’s on Tuesday night at 5:15 p.m. at Superior Heights. On Sept. 20 Korah meets White Pines at Superior Heights at 10 a.m.

In senior action during week two, White Pines and Superior Heights meet at Superior Heights on Wednesday night in a 5:15 p.m. kickoff. On Friday night St. Mary’s and St. Basil meet in a 7 p.m. kickoff at Rocky DIPietro field. On Saturday, week two action wraps up when Korak meets White Pines in a 2 p.m. start.
