The Soo Thunderbirds opened up a 2-0 series lead over the Sudbury Nickel Barons in their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff series on Saturday night.

The Soo Thunderbirds opened up a 2-0 series lead over the Sudbury Nickel Barons in their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff series on Saturday night.

A goal by Brandon Warmington on the power play late in the second period gave the Thunderbirds a 2-1 win in game two of their NOJHL semi-final series over the Nickel Barons. Thunderbirds goaltender Steven Dombrowski stopped 41 shots in the win. Anthony Miller also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Alexander Laino stopped 30 shots for the Nickel Barons in the loss.

Game three in the series is set for Tuesday night at the Essar Centre.

In the other NOJHL semi-final, Samuel Blanchet scored the game winner as the North Bay Trappers beat the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 2-1 in game one of the series.
