North Stars win opener at regionals (Updated)

The Soo North Stars opened the 2013 Central Region Telus Cup on Saturday afternoon in Brockville. The North Stars opened the tournament with a 5-1 win against the host-Upper Canada Cyclones.

The North Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period thanks to a pair of goals by Ryan Vendramin.

Jaron Rowe increased the lead to 3-0 when he converted on a penalty shot in the middle frame. The North Stars would take the 3-0 lead into the third period.

In the third period, Cody Caron gave the North Stars a 4-0 lead with a power play marker. Vendramin then rounded out the North Stars scoring with his third goal late in the third period. Upper Canada scored late to break the shutout bid but the North Stars held on for the 5-1 win. Liam Hanna had the goal for Upper Canada.

North Stars goaltender Brian Kment stopped 29 shots in the win.

In the other games at the tournament on Saturday, Ottawa beat Vaughan 3-1. Ottawa goaltender Simon Hofley stopped 37 shots in the win. Vaughan goaltender Daniel LoPapa stopped 33 shots in the loss.

Whitby beat London 5-0 in the final game of the day with Sault Ste. Marie native Mathieu Ouellet stopping 23 shots for the shutout. Spencer Holt had two goals and an assist in the win for Whitby.
