Environmental activist to lead SSMIC workshop this January

International best-selling author and former UN Senior Advisor, Maude Barlow, is scheduled to lead a workshop presented by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, the organization announced today.

Barlow, a Canadian environmental activist, will speak on Too Late to Panic: Protecting Canada’s Water and Energy Supplies on January 24 from 9 to 11 a.m.

This workshop event will provide an in-depth analysis on water-related issues drawing on Barlow’s national and international experience and also discuss opportunities for business innovation to address future challenges.

In 2008 and 2009, Barlow served at the United Nations (UN) as former senior advisor on water to the president of the United Nations General Assembly where she was a leader in the campaign to have water recognized as a human right.

“This workshop promises to provide businesses and individuals with valuable insight on the current state of our water resources and opportunities for innovation moving forward,” said Tom Vair, executive director, SSMIC. “We are thrilled to have someone of this calibre come to our community and open a dialogue about these important issues.”

Maude is the national chairperson of the Council of Canadians, a citizen's advocacy group.

Maude also chairs the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch.

With 11 honorary doctorates, Maude has authored and co-authored sixteen books, including Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and The Coming Battle for the Right to Water.

Online registration for Too Late to Panic: Protecting Canada’s Water and Energy Supplies is available by visiting here.

This event is proudly sponsored by the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP).
