One dead in collision near Wawa

************************* Motor vehicle collision results in fatality

WAWA, ON - On November 20th, 2011 the Superior East OPP Wawa Detachment responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Rabbit Blanket Park in Peterson Township.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:35 a.m. and involved a tractor trailer and a Mazda SUV.

The Michipicoten Volunteer Fire Department and Algoma EMS were dispatched to the scene to assist.

The driver and a rear passenger were taken to the Lady Dunn Health Centre for medical attention and were released.

The front passenger was also transported to the Lady Dunn and remains in hospital.

The second rear passenger a 13-year-old male from Newfoundland was confirmed dead at the scene.

The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit was called to the scene for further investigation.

The investigation has revealed that the north bound tractor trailer lost control on a downhill grade.

The south bound SUV attempted to avoid the collision but was struck by the tractor trailer on the passenger side.

The driver of the tractor trailer has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

The name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
