*************************** Three persons arrested during vehicle stop charged with numerous weapon related offences

On the 19th of October at approximately 3 a.m., officers with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service conducted a vehicle stop on Sackville Road.

There were three persons inside the 1998 GMC Sierra extended-cab truck at the time, the male driver and two passengers, a male adult and one female youth.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 20-year-old Derrick Derasp.

A CPIC check of Derasp revealed him to be an unlicenced driver, to be prohibited by a court order from possessing weapons and ammunition and to be on a valid probation order with the condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

While speaking with Derasp, officers observed a shotgun shell lying on the floor of the passenger side of the vehicle.

As a result, Derasp was arrested.

The accused was searched and officers located on his person, a knife capable of being opened by centrifugal force (prohibited weapon), $4,940 in Canadian currency, a drug debt list and two cell phones.

Officers searched the vehicle and located a loaded, double-barrelled sawed-off .410 shotgun, ten .410 shotgun shells and two containers of bear mace.

A check of the firearm revealed that it was reported stolen from a residence during a break and enter that occurred earlier this year.

Also located were two sets of digital scales, both with a trace amount of cocaine on them and other drug paraphernalia, including two grenade replica marijuana grinders.

As a result, all three persons were arrested and remanded into custody for a bail hearing tomorrow morning.
