Three Korah Collegiate students are among 76 Ontario youth that will be presented with the Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award of Achievement in Toronto by the Honourable David C. Onley, lieutenant governor of Ontario, on October 22, 2011.

Anas Abou-Zaid

Service: Canadian Cancer Society; snow shoveling for elderly; teacher’s assistant.

Adventurous journey: 38 km hike in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Skill: Guitar.

Fitness: Martial arts; underwater hockey; snowboarding.   Anas attained both his Bronze and Silver awards as a member of Korah’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Club.

A student in Korah’s IB program, he is also a certified snowboard instructor and competitive swimmer.

Anas credits the Award with promoting time management skills and exciting endeavors.   Rayne Fisher

Service: Retirement home volunteer; Special Olympics timer; theatre make-up.

Adventurous journey: 24 km kayak expedition in Killarney.

Skill: Flute.

Fitness: Swimming; hip-hop dancing.   Rayne earned her Bronze and Silver Awards as a Korah Collegiate student.

Her interests include swimming, music and make-up.

In the future, Rayne would like to be a make-up artist and business owner; she also plans to complete her Gold Award.   Evelyn Steele

Service:  Assistant water safety instructor.

Adventurous journey: Completed a three-day hiking trip in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Skill: Piano.

Fitness: Cross-country skiing.

Evelyn achieved her Bronze and Silver Awards as a student at Korah Collegiate and Vocational Institute. 

She loves the outdoors and is a competitive cross-country skier on the Ontario Cup Circuit.

After graduating from high school Evelyn may spend a year in another country before studying to become a teacher.

Who: The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, 76 award recipients 

What:On Saturday, October 22, 2011, 76 young people from across Ontario will receive the Silver Award of Achievement from the Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, as part of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, at a ceremony to be held at Queen’s Park in Toronto. 

Where: Legislative Building, Queen’s Park, Toronto, Ontario

When: Saturday, October 22, 2011, 1:30 p.m.  

About the Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, open to youth aged 14 to 25, challenges young people in four areas: community service, skill development, physical fitness and adventurous journey.

By completing the requirements of each section, our youth become active, healthy and involved, which is essential for their future and the future of our community.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was founded by His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip to encourage personal development and community involvement for young people.

Since its establishment in Canada in 1963, more than 500,000 young Canadians have taken the challenge which has bronze, silver and gold awards.
