Renewed interest in the Upper Peninsula's mineral potential is raising concerns about possible environmental consequences, including added pressures on Lake Superior.

Several companies, including a Canadian firm, are involved mining projects now at various stages, the Chicago Tribune reports.

One plan, if activated, could draw up to 150,000 gallons of water daily from Lake Superior.

Other environmental worries focus on inland U.P. waterways, wildlife habitat and air pollution.

After playing a major role in Michigan's nineteenth and early-twentieth century development, mining had been limited in more recent times.
