There were cheers and more than a few tears today as the newly completed Hub Trail extension was dedicated to former Sault Ste. Marie Mayor John Rowswell who passed away August 31, 2010.

In addition to addresses from Mayor Debbie Amoroso, MP Bryan Hayes, MPP David Orazietti, Councillor Pat Mick, Sault Trails Action Committee Chair Donna Hilsinger, and Donna Rowswell, event emcee Councillor Susan Myers read a moving tribute submitted by Dr. David Walde who treated John Rowswell during his long battle with cancer.

Wrote Dr. Walde: "John was my mayor, my patient and my friend. If ever there was a man of and for the Sault, it was John. He was consumed by his passion to achieve his vision for Sault Ste. Marie. His goals and achievements - extraordinary - driving one to superlatives.

"John was dying when we had our last heart-to-heart. He felt so cheated and frustrated that his cancer that he so bravely endured was terminating his greater ambitions for this great city. 'Do you think people will remember me?' he asked. I replied: 'Undoubtedly your Donna and your family. Undoubtedly your friends. Undoubtedly your city.' With this dedication, John, you are the man."
