************************* This past September, a group of about 20 very keen students in Grades 1, 2 and 3 joined the Environmental Club at Greenwood Public School.

Throughout the year, the students have participated in an environmentally-friendly fundraiser, used book sales, rummage sales and sales of Kool-Aid Jammer bags to raise funds to improve the garden at the front of the school.

That dream became a reality at the beginning of May when the club planted geraniums, hostas, a butterfly bush, a butterfly garden and a beautiful flowering crab tree.

It has been a tough month as far as the weather is concerned but a lot of tender loving care has been put into the project and the last of the flowers, pansies and Johnny Jump Ups, were planted by the group last week.

It was a very rewarding experience to see the garden looking colourful and to find plants sprouting in the butterfly garden.

It was with much disappointment when the students arrived at school on Monday, June 15 to find that someone had vandalized the flowering crab tree.

Unfortunately, the damage is such that the tree cannot be saved.

This is a committed and dedicated group of children whose dream of a better world will not be shattered by acts of vandalism.

They will persevere and continue with their efforts to make Greenwood a greener place to be not only inside but outside as well.

Attached is a photo of what remains of the flowering crab tree purchased at New North Greenhouse.

The flower at the base of the tree was placed there by a student in Grade 1 who discovered the damaged tree on the weekend.
