OPP NEWS RELEASE

************************* Two boys rescued after going through ice

BLIND RIVER, ON - (February 9) - On Saturday February 7, 2009, members of the East Algoma OPP detachment responded to a call involving two boys going through the ice.

The boys had been playing on the rocks on the Blind River when one of the boys fell through the ice.

The second boy attempted to rescue the first boy and also ended up in the water.

The second boy was successful in getting onto a piece of floating ice, where he stayed on his stomach until he was rescued by police.

The first boy was pulled from the river by a local citizen and transported to the Blind River hospital by an off-duty firefighter and was later released.

The second boy was rescued near the train bridge by three OPP officers (one off-duty) and one member of the Mississauga First Nation Police Service.

The second boy was transported to Blind River Hospital by ambulance and was released later that evening.

The boys will not be named.

The OPP would like to remind everyone that many factors affect ice thickness including: type of water, its location, the time of year and other environmental factors such as: water depth, size of body of water, currents, and fluctuations in water levels.
