Registered sex offender nabbed by Detroit border officers

Subject of criminal sexual conduct warrants caught at Detroit/Canada tunnel

DETROIT - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers performing inspections at the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel port of entry apprehended a man being sought by Livonia, MI authorities on two outstanding warrants for criminal sexual conduct, 4th degree.

The man, who is a registered sex offender, was taken into custody on Friday, November 23.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., 55-year-old Zouelfikar Nehmeh of Wayne, Michigan arrived at the port of entry as the driver of a Michigan-plated vehicle.

A CBP officer performing primary inspections queried his name and discovered that Nehmeh was being sought on warrant out of Livonia, Michigan for criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree and sexual assault/sodomy.

CBP officers confirmed the warrant and took Nehmeh into custody.

He was turned over to the Livonia City Police Department.

“This apprehension is a direct result of CBP’s increased vigilance during primary inspections at our border crossings,” said Gary Calhoun, acting CBP Detroit port director. “Preventing terrorist and their weapons from entering the country is CBP’s primary mission but thorough and complete inspections regularly uncover a wide variety of violators at our borders.”

In addition to this situation Detroit CBP officers have stopped over 362 people who were wanted by federal, state, and local authorities during the last year that were attempting to enter/ re-enter the country.

During the same time frame CBP officers in the port of Detroit made 236 marijuana seizures totaling more than 850 pounds.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of the nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry.

CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
