Today could be a big day for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and Bay Mills Indian Community.

In Washington, the House Natural Resources Committee is debating bills designed to clear the way for two new southern Michigan casinos operated by the Eastern Upper Peninsula tribes.

A story in yesterday’s Port Huron Times Herald describes Bay Mills’ plans to build a gambling-based complex in Port Huron.

Proponents envision a resort hotel, restaurants, nightclubs and shops on the site of the current Edison Inn, which would be demolished.

The development would stand directly opposite the Point Edward Charity Casino at the foot of Sarnia's Blue Water Bridge.

Meanwhile, Sault Tribe hopes it gains approval for a $350-million project in Romulus near Detroit.

Plans call for a casino, hotel and conference centre.

Some projections indicate the new developments would create up to 6,500 new jobs.
