"This concerns the safety of our law enforcement officers at the border," said local conservative candidate Kenny Walker in response to last weekend’s protest by Canada Customs officers. "It also concerns the safety of the general public."

Citing unsafe working conditions and the need for side firearms, several customs officials engaged in a work stoppage at International Bridge.

"These are the men and women who put their lives on the line each day to keep you and I safe," Walker stated in support of customs officials. "If we expect them to protect us, then we must properly equip them to carry out this responsibility. I support the goals of our customs officers and of their union which defends the safety of these good men and women."
