River invaded by honking mats of rock snot

A new invasive species has been discovered in the St. Marys River near Sault Ste. Marie, two State of Michigan departments are reporting.

Didymosphenia geminata, freshwater algae commonly referred to as didymo or rock snot, have been found in the river in extensive mats, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says.

Michigan State University's Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN) website describes didymo as being brown, tan or yellow in color.
 
Notwithstanding its name, rock snot isn't slimy.
 
"Unlike most algae, it feels like wet cotton and is not slimy," MISIN says.
 
Didymo is sometimes mistaken for fiberglass or even toilet paper.
 
According to MISIN, the alga was known to exist in Canada in the late 19th Century.
 
It was only in the 1990s that it began displaying invasive behaviour.
 
Didymo is most commonly found in cool, nutrient-poor water.
 
It spreads through single cells and can form massive blooms that adversely affect freshwater fish, plants and invertebrate species.
 
Here's MISIN's advice on preventing spread of midymo:
  • Before leaving a river, look for clumps of algae and sediment, and remove them. Leave them at the site.
  • Soak and scrub all gear for at least one minute in a two percent (by volume) solution of household bleach, or a five percent (by volume) solution of salt, or dishwashing detergent. Note that all surfaces must be contacted by the cleaning solution.
  • Lifejackets should be soaked to insure they do not remain a risk. If cleaning is not practical, after the item is dry to the touch, leave it to dry for at least 48 hours before using another freshwater source.

Michigan confirms two new invasive species

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Department of Natural Resources confirmed two new invasive species in Michigan waters. 

DEQ staff recently confirmed a freshwater alga commonly known as didymo or rock snot growing in extensive mats in the St. Marys River near Sault Ste. Marie.

Additionally, DEQ staff recently discovered New Zealand mud snails in the Pere Marquette River near Ludington.

Unlike other types of nuisance algae, didymo thrives in cold, clean water.

Under the right conditions, didymo can grow into thick mats that cover the river bottom.

The mats look and feel like wet wool, which is why the algae is sometimes called rock snot, although it’s not actually slimy.

Didymo is not a threat to human health, but the formation of mats crowds out biologically valuable algae and invertebrates that are important food for fish.

Additionally, thick didymo mats can become snagged in fishing gear and interfere with fishing and wading.

New Zealand mud snails are each only about 1/8th of an inch long, and can be difficult to see.

However, they often cluster in high densities, and compete with native snails and other macroinvertebrates for food and space.

Originally from New Zealand, the snails are now widespread in many western states and present in Wisconsin. They are easily transported and resilient, and can survive in damp environments for up to 26 days.

Both of these new invaders can easily attach to fishing equipment, wading gear and other hard surfaces and hitch a ride to a new environment.

Anglers and boaters are reminded to take steps to clean, drain and dry their equipment to help prevent the spread of both didymo and New Zealand mud snails, as well as all types of aquatic invasive species.

Boaters are required by law to remove aquatic plants before launching, as well as to drain live wells, bilges and all water from boats before leaving the access site.

Additionally, boaters and anglers are encouraged to clean boats and equipment, including waders, with hot water or a dilute bleach solution, and allow to dry for at least five days before reusing, when possible.

INVASIVE SPECIES REPORT
 
Didymo (“rock snot”) - Didymosphenia geminata
 
Present in some Michigan waters
 
Identification
 
Looks and feels like white or tan/brown wet wool. Ranges from small cotton ball-sized patches to thick blankets and long ropy strings that flow in currents. Although often referred to as “rock snot," didymo is not slimy.
 
Habitat
 
Didymo thrives in low nutrient cold water systems. It is a microscopic single-celled freshwater diatom whose cells can form stalks that attach to hard substrates such as rocks. Under the right conditions, prolific growth patterns result in thick mats that can cover river and stream bottoms.
 
Native Range
 
Likely native to Lake Superior and parts of Canada.
 
Local Concern
 
Didymo mats alter habitat and food sources for fish and can make recreation difficult or unpleasant. Mats can also foul water intakes and fishing gear as well as impact fishing access and wading.
 
Distribution
 
Didymo cells haves been documented in the Great Lakes Basin and Michigan waters in low abundance, but nuisance blooms have not been documented in Michigan until recently in the St. Marys River
.
Means of Introduction/spread
:
Didymo can incidentally be transported on boats, anchors and fishing gear such as waders, felt soled boots and nets.
