Phil Becker, the general manager of the International Bridge Administration (IBA), plans to retire from his post in January.

Becker, 62, made the announcement at Thursday's meeting of the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Authority (SSMBA) board.

"My work here at the International Bridge has been an incredibly rewarding experience," Becker said. "This has not been an easy choice to make, but it feels like now is the right time."

SSMBA Chairwoman Helen Gillespie wished Becker well on behalf of the binational panel and praised his legacy.

"Phil has worked tirelessly to nurture his staff and maintain congenial leadership at the IBA," Gillespie said. "He’s made great outreach efforts to the communities on both sides of the border, and has always maintained the incredible integrity of the bridge."

Becker, a licensed professional engineer, holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. He assumed the position of IBA general manager in February 2001, following various engineering management positions he held in northern Michigan during his 28-year career with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

"What I look forward to most in retirement is spending more time with family and friends, especially our nine grandchildren," Becker said. "I also look forward to more time to pursue my passion for investing my time in others through volunteerism in Rotary, Special Olympics and prison ministry."

Becker said he’ll miss working with IBA staff, the SSMBA board, MDOT and Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd. staff who have been very supportive over the years.

"I will also miss the people I have had the pleasure of working with in our Sister Cities of Sault Ste. Marie, as well as Michigan and Ontario, who do their very best to achieve our true potential in terms of economic development and quality of life," Becker said.

Becker was recognized in May for his long service with MDOT. MDOT Chief Administrative Officer Laura Mester presented Becker with a certificate of appreciation from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recognizing his "meritorious public service."

In the wake of Becker's announcement, the SSMBA board moved to work with MDOT to determine a selection process for the next general manager.
