SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT

ENVIRONMENT CANADA

**************************
Heat warning in effect for:
    •    Chapleau - Missinaibi Lake
    •    Gogama - Foleyet
    •    Greater Sudbury and vicinity
    •    Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake

First stretch of hot weather of the season this weekend for Northern Ontario.

A very warm and somewhat humid airmass will be in place across much of Northern Ontario for the next few days.

Daytime highs are expected to reach to near 30 degrees today and quite likely again Sunday.

In addition, overnight lows will only fall to the 16 to 20 degree mark, thus providing little relief from the hot weather.

Watch for symptoms of heat illness, which include:

  • dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting
  • headache
  • rapid breathing and heartbeat
  • extreme thirst and
  • decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine.

If you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids.

Water is best.

Drink plenty of liquids especially water before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration.

Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:
    •    Chapleau - Missinaibi Lake
    •    Gogama - Foleyet

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon or this evening that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required.

Please monitor local media or Weatheradio.

To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports to #ONStorm.
