It was a perfect morning for a walk as over 100 people gathered at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion Saturday for the annual Sault Ste. Marie Walk for ALS.

City Councillor Terry Sheehan, who lost a cousin to the illness, said a few words before joining the crowd for the 5km walk.

The walk went from the Pavilion to the Locks and back, with a few people jogging and even skateboarding.

There were two participants in the walk who are currently battling ALS.

Eddy LeFrancois from Dubreuilville and Sharon Carson of Sault Ste. Marie rode in their electric chairs with their family and friends behind them all the way.

"It was a great effort on everyone's part. I'm happy with what we accomplished here today," said Brigitte Labby, regional manager, Northeastern Ontario, ALS Canada.

The total at the end of the Sault Ste. Marie walk was almost $13,000 and growing, as more funds online will need to be calculated.

"Last year we raised about $13,000, so this year we have at least matched, and likely surpassed that," said Labby.

Donations will continue to be accepted until December 31 of this year.
