SAULT STE MARIE REGION
CONSERVATION AUTHORITY

*************************
On Saturday, June 6 at noon, until Sunday, June 7 at noon, the Sault Naturalists and friends will be exploring the Fort Creek Conservation Area to find, identify and catalogue as many species of flora and fauna (plants and animals) as they can during a 24 hour BioBlitz.

A BioBlitz is part fun and part science and involves people who enjoy nature as well as amateur and professional scientific volunteers who can identify the insects, plants, birds and animals that live in the area.

Located in the heart of Sault Ste. Marie, Fort Creek Conservation Area is an urban forest teaming with nature.

The BioBlitz will result in a report which will provide a glimpse of the abundant flora and fauna coexisting with people in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Sault Naturalists are asking members of the community to join them during this 24 hour BioBlitz.

Anyone wishing to take part in this event will be paired with a Taxon Team who can help in the collection and identification of species.

“Our goal is to identify 500 species and at least one ‘Species At Risk’ during this event,” said David Euler a long standing member of the Sault Naturalists. “Anyone wishing to participate can come out and help, even if it’s only for an hour or so during the BioBlitz.”

The BioBlitz is support by the Biodiversity Education and Awareness Network (BEAN), a group of organizations working together to promote an increased awareness and understanding of biodiversity in Ontario.

“International Biodiversity Day is celebrated around the world on May 22,“ explains Euler. “Our BioBlitz supports the idea that living sustainably is closely linked to a healthy natural world, often expressed as conserving biodiversity.”

Participants of the BioBlitz are asked to park their vehicles at Algoma Office Equipment, 708 Carmen's Way, located across from the Fort Creek Conservation Area on Second Line East.

Founded in 1954, the Sault Naturalists is an international club with about 100 members from both Ontario and Michigan.

They are affiliated with Ontario Nature, Michigan Audubon Society, and Nature Canada.
