UNION OF ONTARIO INDIANS

*************************
UOI OFFICES – Anishinabek Nation leadership encourage all Canadians to join in their local Walk for Reconciliation this Sunday, May 31.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Reconciliation Canada, dignitaries, public leaders and fellow Canadians on a huge Walk for Reconciliation.

The walk is designed to transform and renew the very essence of relationships among Aboriginal peoples and all Canadians.

As the country marks the conclusion of the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, it is important to create relationships and connections upon which efforts towards reconciliation can continue.

“The main walk is happening in Ottawa to coincide with the Truth and Reconciliation events that were held this week in Ottawa and the release of the TRC report,” says Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee. “There are walks happening all over Canada and we encourage everyone to take part in one of them.”

TRC Commission Chair Justice Murray Sinclair says: "Reconciliation is about forging and maintaining respectful relationships. There are no shortcuts."

The Anishinabek Nation established the Union of Ontario Indians as its secretariat in 1949. The UOI is a political advocate for 39 member communities across Ontario, representing approximately 55,000 people.

The Union of Ontario Indians is the oldest political organization in Ontario and can trace its roots back to the Confederacy of Three Fires, which existed long before European contact.
