New partnership to benefit local and out-of-area students

Sault College and Kiwanis Club Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Sault College is a leader in the delivery of quality Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies programming.

A new Memorandum of Understanding between Sault College and the Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie will further enhance an unmatched natural environment learning experience.

On Thursday May, 28 at noon in the Boardroom of Sault College, Colin Kirkwood, Dean of the School of the Environment, Technology and Business, along with Brad Frechette, a Kiwanis Club representative, will sign an agreement that outlines the terms in which the two organizations will work together to provide a unique experience to students studying at Sault College, including the use of the Kiwanis St. Joe’s Island Woodlot and classroom for educational purposes.

“Our formula for long-term success in the Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies area includes spaces that inspire learning, experienced, qualified staff, and an unmatched natural environment, says Colin Kirkwood, Dean, Environment, Technology and Business. “Our field-based approach to learning is enhanced by our outdoor lab located adjacent to campus and single and multi-day field trips into the northern wilderness. We are excited to be partnering with the Kiwanis Club to enhance the learning experiences for our Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies students.”

Each year, Sault College’s Forest Conservation Technician, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Technician, and Adventure Recreation and Parks Technician co-operative programs attract students from across the country.

Sault College students are no stranger to the St. Joe’s Island location.

Earlier this year, students participated in many activities there including Deer Check, a program run in conjunction with the St. Joe’s Island Anglers and Hunters Association where students weigh and age deer harvested during the annual hunt, assisting the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry with critical information in making decisions for management of the deer herd.

In addition, students also participated in the nocturnal owl surveys on the island to better understand owl populations in the area.

“The Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie is excited to partner with Sault College's Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies Program. This exciting partnership allows the students to have an outdoor classroom and completely comprehensive learning experience. The Students can then provide our organization with the information necessary to keep the tree farm property healthy and prosperous. The mutual interests of Sault College and our club will be achieved into the future as we think of new and innovative ways to improve the facilities and natural environment on beautiful St. Joseph Island,” says Brad Frechette, Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie.

The signing will take place in the A-Wing Boardroom at noon on Thursday, May 28.

Faculty from the Natural Environment and Outdoor Studies programs will be in attendance as well as Advisory Committee members and members of the Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie.

Parking is available in the metered parking located at the main entrance to the College.
