Four council candidates barred from running in 2018

Four City Council candidates in last year's municipal elections failed to meet a deadline for filing financial statements and are now ineligible to run in the next election in 2018.

Four City Council candidates in last year's municipal elections failed to meet a deadline for filing financial statements and are now ineligible to run in the next election in 2018.

The following, according to City Clerk Malcolm White, failed to meet the 2 p.m. deadline on Friday, March 27:

  • Christopher Bonin (Newman) who placed last among six candidates in Ward 1.
  • John Duke, who placed third among four candidates in Ward 2.
  • Michael Selvers, who placed fourth among four Ward 2 candidates.
  • Ward 4's David O'Brien

Christopher Bonin, also known as Christopher Newman, tried unsuccessfully to persuade Superior Court Justice Ted Gareau to allow him to file nomination papers without paying the mandatory $100 fee.

Bonin (Newman) argued that the fee was unconstitutional and prejudicial against candidates who didn't have the money.

If any of the above candidates had actually been elected, they would have now been forced to forfeit their council seat.

Municipal elections are held every four years.
