ALGOMA UNIVERSITY

*************************
Dr. Craig Chamberlin will become Algoma University’s third President since it gained its independence, effective July 1, 2015.

Algoma University’s Board of Governors voted unanimously in favour of the appointment at a March 31 meeting of the Board.

Dr. Chamberlin comes to Algoma University from the University of Regina where he has held various academic and administrative positions.

Dr. Chamberlin’s appointment marks the culmination of a search process that began in May 2014 when President Myers announced he would not be seeking renewal of his 5-year term.

The presidential search was carried out by a nine member search committee made up of Board members representing all segments of the University community including the University’s Anishinaabe partners, faculty, staff, and students.

Armando Plastino, Chair of the Board of Governors and the Presidential Search Committee said, “Algoma University is very pleased and excited to welcome Dr. Chamberlin aboard. Dr. Chamberlin’s academic background and broad experience in all facets of university affairs will be a huge asset to Algoma University. One of the characteristics that set Craig apart from the other candidates was his exceptional interpersonal skills. He has shown himself to be a relationship builder with students, faculty, staff and community partners throughout his career. We know Craig will be a superb President, and expect he will be instrumental in continuing to establish Algoma University’s reputation for excellence in undergraduate education.”

Plastino added, “On behalf of the entire Board, I would like to thank the search consultant, The Phelps Group, and members of the search committee for their dedication, hard work and sound judgement. Their careful assessment and commitment to the process resulted in the appointment of this outstanding candidate.”

Dr. Chamberlin has been an Associate Professor at the University of Regina for the past thirteen years, a time during which he served as both Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Social Work.

Dr. Chamberlin has a PhD in kinesiology with a major in motor learning/control from Louisiana State University and a BPE and MPE from the University of British Columbia.

His professional experience includes faculty positions at the University College of the Fraser Valley, University of Northern Colorado, California State University, Northridge, and Medicine Hat College.

Dr. Chamberlin said,” I am honoured and humbled by the confidence shown in me by the Board of Governors at Algoma University in being named their third President. The more knowledge I gained about Algoma University as I worked through the search process, the more excited I got about the position. Algoma is a special place – not least of which comes from its history as the former site of a residential school and the strong relationship that has been established with the Anishinaabe people. I will ensure that this history and strong relationship is respected while working to support the University community as it moves forward as a dynamic, innovative, and modern university”.

Colleagues and associates describe Dr. Chamberlin as being collaborative, collegial, ethical, principled, engaging, visionary, and student focused.

These attributes will enable him to have a smooth transition when he joins the Algoma University community in July.

Dr. Chamberlin plans to visit Algoma University in the next few weeks to greet the university community.
