Christmas and New Year's Day Holiday Operations

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Hours of operation for City of Sault Ste. Marie facilities and services during the Christmas and New Year’s Day holiday period are listed below.

The following municipal facilities will be closed to the public at noon December 24 and closed to the public December 25 and 26:

Civic Centre

Essar Centre office

Library – Centennial Branch

Seniors’ Centres (Drop-In and Steelton)

Social Services:

Ontario Works, Social Housing, Community Child Care, Accessibility Centre

Public Works and Transportation administrative office

For 24 hour emergency service requests, please call 705-759-5201.

Transit office

Essar Centre Box Office

The Box Office will close at 4:30 p.m. – December 24 and will be closed Dec. 25 & 26.

Landfill Site – 402 Fifth Line East

The Landfill will close at 2 p.m. – December 24 and will be closed Dec. 25 & 26.

CHRISTMAS EVE – DECEMBER 24

Arenas

The Essar Centre, McMeeken Centre and John Rhodes Community Centre arenas close at 4 p.m. December 24. The Northern Community Centre is closed December 24.

Children’s Centres

Maycourt and Jessie Irving Children’s Centres will be closed Monday, December 22 through to Friday, December 26. 

The Municipal Best Start Program – Holy Family will be closed from December 22 to January 2 inclusive; however, Best Start is operating a Christmas camp for school-age children December 29 – 31 and January 2.

Ermatinger•Clergue National Historic Site Closed December 24 to January 1. Open January 2.

John Rhodes Community Centre Pool Closed December 24.

Library

The Korah and Churchill branches are closed December 24, 25 and 26.

Transit

Last transit buses depart from the terminal at 5:45 p.m. on December 24.

The last pick-up or return for Parabus service on December 24 will be at 5:30 p.m. For Parabus bookings call 705-942-1404.

CHRISTMAS DAY AND BOXING DAY – DECEMBER 25 AND 26

Arenas

All City-operated arenas and the Northern Community Centre are closed Christmas Day. All City-operated arenas are closed Boxing Day with the exception of John Rhodes Arena #1 which is open 1 – 3 p.m. for public skating. The Northern Community Centre is closed December 26.

John Rhodes Community Centre Pool

Closed December 25. Open December 26 – 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Parent/Child & Lane Swim & 1 to 3 p.m. – Public Swim.

Seniors’ Centres (Drop-In & Steelton) Closed December 25 to January 1 inclusive.

Transit

Regular transit will NOT operate December 25 and 26. Parabus will run on December 25 and 26 from 8:30 a.m. to midnight. For Parabus bookings call 705-942-1404.

NEW YEAR’S EVE – DECEMBER 31

Arenas

Open for scheduled events only December 31. The McMeeken Centre and the John Rhodes Community Centre arenas close at 4 p.m.

Library

The Public Library – Centennial branch closes at noon. The Churchill and Korah branches are closed December 31. All three branches will be closed Thursday, January 1.

Transit

Last buses depart the terminal at 11:45 p.m. The last pick-up or return for Parabus service on December 31 will be at 11:30 p.m.

NEW YEAR’S DAY – JANUARY 1

The following operations will be closed to the public on New Year’s Day:

Cemetery office

Children’s Centres (Maycourt, Jessie Irving, and Best Start – Holy Family)

Civic Centre

Community Arenas: Essar Centre, John Rhodes Arena #2, McMeeken Centre

Essar Centre office & Box office

Library – Centennial Branch, Churchill and Korah Branches

Northern Community Centre

Public Works and Transportation administrative office

REFUSE & RECYCLING COLLECTION

There will be no collection on December 25. Collection will be one day late for the remainder of the week starting Friday, December 26. 

There will be no collection on January 1.

Starting Friday, January 2 refuse and recycling collection will be one day late until January 3.

The two-bag/container refuse limit is waived from December 26 to January 9 providing you are recycling and the number of excess bags is within reason. 

Residents are encouraged to recycle all cardboard, steel cans, aluminum containers, glass bottles, #1 and #2 plastics, and all wrapping paper that is not foil or cellophane.

Refuse must be placed curbside by 7:30 a.m. to ensure pickup.

Packaging poly-styrene (solid pieces of Styrofoam) can be dropped off at the Cambrian Mall parking lot Friday, December 26 to Saturday, January 10. Place in clear plastic bags to keep clean and dry. Christmas trees can be dropped off at the Cambrian Mall site starting December 26 until Saturday, January 10.

The municipal landfill site will close at 2 p.m. December 24. The Site is also closed December 25 and 26.

Open December 27, 29, 30 and 31. Closed January 1. Open January 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, January 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
