A gas leak caused by demolition forced the evacuation of residents of an apartment building at 26 Terry Fox Place on Monday afternoon.

Residents were able to remove their pets as Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services evacuated the building.

The demolition was being done to the existing concrete balconies of the apartment building.

A supervisor with Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services said a slab of concrete fell on the main gas line to the building, causing the leak.

No fire was reported, and fans were being used to clear the building of any possible fumes before residents were allowed back in.
