Hand hygiene a 'useful preventative technique' for dealing with respiratory illness

During this time of year with students going back to school, there is always an increase in respiratory illness seen in children.

We recognize that there is some concern regarding the respiratory illness known as Enterovirus (EV-D68).

Algoma Public Health would like to inform the public that there is no confirmed case of Enterovirus (EV-D68) in the Algoma district.

What is EV-D68?
The virus is one of many so-called enteroviruses, which are associated with different types of diseases and affect millions of people around the world.

What are the symptoms?
In mild cases, EV-D68 is like the effects of a common cold or the flu: fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough and muscle aches.

"We don’t want people rushing to the emergency room just because they have a runny nose," says Dr. Barker, medical officer of health for the Algoma District. “However, if your child is experiencing shortness of breath or is having difficulty breathing then you should seek medical attention.”

How does it spread?
EV-D68 spreads from person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or touches contaminated surfaces.

Who is at risk?
Children, particularly those under five and who have respiratory troubles, such as allergies or asthma, are more at risk.

How can I protect myself?

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Avoiding touching and kissing people who are sick. Don’t share utensils with them.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces.
