People of all ages and walks of life filled Sault Ste. Marie's waterfront Sunday morning, participating in the Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research.

The run is held annually in cities across Canada to honour Terry Fox, who ran more than 5,000 kilometres himself before ending his run.

Fox died shortly after but Canadians from coast to coast continue his legacy to raise money for cancer research.

As much as $463,000 has been donated from the Sault Ste. Marie area alone since 1982, not including 2014 numbers.

“I think it’s a great cause. you read a lot about charities where not that much money goes to the actual charity. With Terry Fox eighty-four cents of every dollar go to the charity, plus he’s a hero,” said Lindsay Koskenoja, chair of the organizing committee for the event.

Last year’s Terry Fox Run held in Sault Ste. Marie featured over 600 participants and raised $40,000.

The 2014 numbers have yet to be declared by the oranization.

The week of September 8 to 14 was recently proclaimed “Terry Fox Week” by Mayor Debbie Amaroso, with the 14th declared “Terry Fox Day.”

“Seeing all the people out there is awesome, it’s so busy,” said Koskenoja.

Over 60 volunteers helped make the event possible on Sunday, said Koskenoja.

Participants ran, walked, cycled or otherwise wheeled along the route, ending up back at the pavilion for a barbecue, games, face-painting and a silent auction.

Koskenoja was happy with the amount of people who came out to participate despite rainy weather.

All prizes for the auction were donated and proceeds go to the event.

“We have had so much support from businesses and our team has been awesome in getting us prizes,” she said.
