GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO
"Today is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contributions Ontario's hardworking, talented people make each and every day, as we work together to build a stronger province.
It is also a chance to reflect on the progress we have made improving working conditions for all Ontarians.
We have come so far since Ontario first observed Labour Day in 1872, thanks to the tireless efforts of organized labour.
Workers' rights are now protected under the Employment Standards Act, which gives employees rights such as a minimum wage, paid vacations and public holidays, and overtime pay.
Organized labour's advocacy for worker safety has also led to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which ensures people can work in a safe environment.
I would like to thank Kevin Flynn, the Minister of Labour, for championing a province in which every workplace is safe, fair and harmonious.
That is essential to the social and economic well-being of the people of Ontario.
I wish everyone a relaxing, well-deserved holiday."
