Workers comp suffered under Liberal watch, says Mantha

Saturday, May 17, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff
NEWS RELEASE

MICHAEL MANTHA,
PROVINCIAL NDP CANDIDATE
FOR ALGOMA-MANITOULIN

*************************
NDP: Liberal cuts to injured workers’ benefits disturbing

ELLIOT LAKE - Algoma-Manitoulin NDP candidate Michael Mantha continues to raise alarm bells over the internal changes to WSIB benefits under the Liberal watch.

“The all-out assault under the Liberal government on injured workers is alarming. These are some of our provinces most vulnerable citizens and they need our support. People are outraged to see continuous government mismanagement and scandals, and money flowing into the pockets of corporate CEO’s while injured workers continue to suffer.” Mantha stated.

Today the Manitoulin and North Shore Injured Workers (MNSIW) were stationed at the bridge in Little Current ensuring that voters were aware of the Liberal mistreatment of injured workers.

“I have met with many of these workers and their families and have brought their concerns to Queen’s Park. Sadly our efforts continue to fall on the deaf ears of this Liberal government.” Mantha said.

“Since 2009 when David Marshall became the head of WSIB, we have seen drastic reduction of benefits for injured workers. While Marshall receives a 20% bonus on his $400,000 salary, WSIB claim denial rates have shot up by 50%. There has been a cut of $631 million in benefits and vocational training has been slashed from 19 months to five months.

"The average annual benefit paid to an injured worker at a 6 year post injury review has been reduced by 28.6%. There has also been a reduction of 31.3% in permanent impairment awards from 2010 to 2011.

“I will continue to work with those organizations fighting to protect the rights of injured workers across Algoma-Manitoulin and the province. This government needs to ensure that injured workers are not harmed further by these reckless policy changes and New Democrats will continue to stand up for the rights of injured workers.” Mantha asserted.

Just another cash cow for this government, collect from every worker and deny, deny, deny any claims. Sounds like EI with their surpluses at the expense of the workers
steelworker 5/17/2014 4:58:25 PM Report

...and the NDP propped them up all the way.

I can't argue that, but I am sure this "change in policy" happened before the dippers supported them

WSIB = We Screw Individuals Bluntly.

So Mr.Mantha...you thought those Liberal scoundrels were good enough to leave in office...talk about being 2 faced.

As an advocate for injured workers, I see these problems daily. At Injured Workers Advocates of the Sault we help injured workers navigate the wsib system for no fee. If anyone you know is having trouble they should contact our office for some advice. Some things in life are truly free.
Number One Son 5/17/2014 8:42:57 PM Report

As an injured worker advocate. I don't see the problem as described by Mantha. The real problem lies with educating workers on how the system works, and using the WSIB options to their fullest. I worked in a very pro-active union that spent tens of thousands of dollars annually training members in WSIB advocacy. Nobody is out there to take your hand through the process.I think unions have a responsibility in this matter as well.

The legislation hasn't changed dramatically in recent years. Once again, the lack of successful claims lies as much with poor representation at the union level rather than WSIB adjudicators screwing the worker.
lowla 5/17/2014 10:00:28 PM Report

there are a lot of people in this city that do not have representation from a union and there are unscrupulous adjudicators that take advantage of that fact.
tosimple 5/18/2014 7:22:12 AM Report

Number one son. I don't know what union you belong to. I just know that my union did nothing for me. I think for a union to educate any one first they should be educated. WSIB has had a major surplus of money for years. WHY? Because most claims are denied. I do admit there are a lot of actors trying to ride the gravy train...Why is it when u are given a small pension when u turn 65 you can not leave it to your wife or children??
S.Claus 5/18/2014 7:59:49 AM Report

Under Liberal watch with the NDP supporting them all the way. Adding at least another 10 BILLION DOLLARS to the Provincial Debt. Those RESPONSIBLE for the debt must now be held ACCOUNTABLE also
rockbanger 5/18/2014 12:26:36 PM Report

Currently Essar Steel denies and intimidates employees who have been injured on the job.

Essar was in the news bragging of how they had reduced the compensation costs. Putting workers in fear of their jobs is a very efficient method of reducing people who claim injuries.

Unfortunately, that is how Incorporated Companies may act or behave when they prop up a fascist government. It appears that the current Liberal government has failed the workers at Essar Steel... In terms of WSIB entitlements, MOL enforcement policies and MOE policing.

Time to get rid of the RED machine.
All Is Well 5/18/2014 12:28:12 PM Report

I agree Clause. The Liberals, when the recession came about, should have done what the PC's did. Close hospitals, layoff teachers and nurses, layoff public sector workers, attack squeegee kids, remove monies from all programs, initiate nothing, build nothing, give corporations more tax breaks, forget the environment, sell off public holdings, layoff food and health inspectors and keep those coal-fired plants up and running. Just to name a few.
Those were the days of glory for Ontario. NOT.

Sammy1099 5/18/2014 6:29:18 PM Report

There are two sides to every to the WSIB dilemma. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who abuse the system. I know one personally, and have known others. The individual works at Essar and is claiming a debilitating back injury. He is full of shit. I see him shovelling his driveway, loading up his truck, climbing on his roof etc..

If everybody was honest it would be simple, only those who need it would get it.
I suspect about 50% if not more of claims are purely fraud or at the least exaggerated. So if you are looking for someone to blame for rigid WSIB regulations you probably can look at one in 5 of your co-workers. I’m sure we all know someone who scams the system, the result is, now if you really need it, it’s a PITA to get.

I called WSIB on the prick that I know is scaming the system. I would suggest that if you know anyone, you do the same.I would also call ESSAR but I don't know who to talk to there.

Sammy1099

You sound like a real tool.

50% fakers. No way.

Obviously know everything.

I never liked dial-a-rat... But goofs such as yourself love this method of hurting people.

Where did you get your medical degree?

Loser.
Sammy1099 5/18/2014 7:20:39 PM Report

Hit a nerve did I?

I had to suffer the consequences of scammers. My mother had a stroke it took years of playing phone tag to get her benefits. If anybody is hurting anybody it’s these assholes that milk the system, they make it difficult for people who really need it. I have no sympathy for them. They are cheats and liars and dog f*ck*rs and they get exactly what they deserve. Scammers are the real “tools”.

Why should everybody else pay so some lazy prick can get paid to sit on his ass or go out fishing and hunting? If it’s legitimate fine, if you’re a liar well then kiss my ass.
rockbanger 5/19/2014 7:54:53 AM Report

Sammy

Your an A-hole.

Sammy1099 5/19/2014 8:31:06 AM Report

Why RB you’re not defrauding are you? That would make you an asshole. What you think you are special? Everybody should pay so little RB can sit on his ass. I can’t really see why anyone would be upset for people who rat out fraudulent behaviour. That is unless of course they are milking the system too.

Oh and I wasn’t afraid to give them my name he knows who told them. I could give a rats ass. The guys not only a scammer he also had no problem calling my employer and accusing me of theft, calling my fathers employer making false allegations. The guy even tried to get a HVAC employee fired because he didn’t like his estimate. You reap what you sow.
rockbanger 5/19/2014 8:52:15 AM Report

No, I am healthy and work for my money. Not on any insurance. How about you? Your scam not working out well? Got cut off.

When halfwits decide to be an clown and call the authorities...It is usually out of jealousy. Join the circus bozo. Try not to be jealous of your neighbour.

Because your neighbour can do yard work does not mean the doctor does not know about it.. Try to understand that most doctors encourage people to do what they can. Travel if you can. Keep moving. Where you expect them to stay in the house with the curtains drawn.

Won't keep this going but if you look in the mirror you will see a real idiot. Cowardly fool who is jealous.

MYPOINT 5/19/2014 9:17:32 AM Report

Although I know I am going to upset some of you, I actually think that SAMMY has the right idea. If you KNOW FOR A FACT and have some video proof that someone is ripping off the WSIB, why would you condone it? Everyone is saying that this Province is in debt up to it's ears and yet when someone is faking an injury of some kind, THAT person is costing ALL of us financially and causing the system to break.

Consider this. Person E gets injured on the job. He tries to get compensation from WSIB which of course, is his right. Unfortunately, WSIB must investigate his claim more diligently due to the fact that persons A+B+C+D who work at the same place have made 'suspicious' claims and have tied up a lot of the staff at WSIB in doing extensive investigations. Now let us say that YOU have a video of persons B + C doing manual labor at some other place and you KNOW that they are supposedly injured and are supposedly not able to do this type of stuff. Why is it wrong to inform the WSIB of this situation?

As I said at the beginning, I know that this post i going to upset some of you but I believe in honesty.

Now just think, if that little toad HUDAK gets voted in, things will only get much worse because he will end up cutting many of these public servants who do this kind of investigating into 'suspicious' claims. This will mean that there will be many, many more fraudulent claims that end up getting WSIB while honest folks who get injured will still NOT be able to get their claim justified by the WSIB or if their claims are finally justified, it will take forever to get this done.

As always, your views may differ :)
Sammy1099 5/19/2014 10:14:40 AM Report

Gee RB I guess you are illiterate as well as a loser who supports fraud. You missed where I said “he also had no problem calling my employer and accusing me of theft”. I’ve worked since I was 15, paid my own way through College and University; with the exception of 1 yr I received a student loan. I get squat from the government. I’m not jealous of him, he is a thief. I know because it’s not just one day in which he is having a good day it’s regularly.

I have absolutely no problem with people getting WSIB legitimately. That is what it is for. The reason why people have so much difficulty in getting a valid claim processed is because of assholes who defraud.

What you think we should all help these con-artists? They have a sense of entitlement, “I can get paid for doing jack-shit” anybody who doesn’t help me in that endeavour is a rat or a loser. I think the other way, why should I be quiet so you can rip the system “us” off so you can sit on your ass.
suckerminnows 5/19/2014 11:41:40 AM Report

wsib is full of sunshine earners and not many lawyers have the balls to take them on because for every lawyer that tackles compensation they have five to fight them and have the money to postpone cases and they are sick people screwing the injured worker
mosquitos 5/19/2014 4:57:46 PM Report

So I guess if you are denied WSIB benefits when you are injured, you shouldn't try and work or keep your house, your family, your dignity. Lie down, lose everything and be homeless? The WSIB is completely corrupt and exempt from the judiciary, that's the problem. If they were vulnerable to the legal system, we wouldn't have this criminal WSIB.

I had my knee crushed @ work in 1980
The lost wage benefits where sporadic. The lost wage benefits I have received in the last 35 years equals a one week pay check for the President of WSIB.
The service you get is extremely Shoddy if you even get any, they never answer their phone because they won't to cause you stress and then call you back from their board room full of WSIB Turkeys on a speaker phone....If injured workers can't get it what good is there service?

Like I said if injured workers can't get lost wage benefits? Why do we need a gauntlet of narcissistic self centered Turkeys collecting fat salaries and lush pensions from WSIB ???
