Algoma District Cancer Program welcomes new physicians

August 9, 2013 – The Algoma District Cancer Program (ADCP) and Sault Area Hospital (SAH) are pleased to announce the arrival of two new full-time medical oncologists and a hematologist to the ADCP team.

Dr. Mohammad Rassouli comes to us from Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie, where he was a member of the attending staff at the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Program (SMRCP).

After earning a PhD in Biochemistry in 1993, Dr. Rassouli obtained his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto (U of T) in 1998, followed by a speciality in Internal Medicine in 2001 from McGill University and sub-specialty in Oncology from McMaster University in 2003.

He completed his Clinical Fellowship in Hospital Medicine at the U of T in 2004.

Prior to his time with the SMRCP, Dr. Rassouli also practiced at Southlake Hospital in Newmarket, Scarborough General Hospital and Sunnybrook Hospital’s Odette Cancer Centre in Toronto.

Dr. Ioannis Voutsadakis originally hails from Greece, where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki School of Medicine in 1993.

After completing his Internship in Internal Medicine at the Army Officers’ VA Hospital in Athens in 1994, he went on to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, where he completed his Residency in 1997.

Dr. Voutsadakis then received his Fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology from Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York in 2000. Dr. Voudsadakis has practiced in New York, France and Greece, and most recently as the Chef de Clinique at the Centre Pluridisciplinaire d’Oncologie, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Since last summer, the ADCP has been working in affiliation with Health Sciences North Regional Cancer Program (HSNRCP) in Sudbury through a truly unique partnership for the provision of patient care during a time when Dr. Silvana Spadafora was the only full-time local oncologist in Sault Ste. Marie.

This professional partnership allowed our local team to continue to provide the highest level of cancer care for our patients in the Algoma Region while physician recruitment efforts were undertaken.

With the arrival of Drs. Rassouli and Voutsadakis to our team, the ADCP returns to a complement of three full-time permanent local oncologists and is again able to work independently of HSNRCP in the provision of oncology-related services.

SAH also recently welcomed Dr. Danny Hill to the hospital and ADCP. Dr. Hill’s training and expertise in hemotology have been of tremendous benefit to ADCP patients suffering from diseases of the blood as well as other patients throughout the hospital.

Dr. Hill received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Alberta in 2007, followed by a specialty in Internal Medicine in 2010 at the University of Western Ontario and his Hematology Fellowship from McGill University in 2012.

His support of Dr. Spadafora since his arrival at SAH has been instrumental in allowing the ADCP’s ability to continue to deliver quality care to our patients.

“The addition of these physicians and the specialist skills and training they bring with them are a boon to the ADCP and SAH as a whole, and of course, to our patients,” stated Dr. Heather O’Brien, SAH Chief of Staff and Medical Affairs. “At the same time, it’s imperative to recognize the truly extraordinary dedication and devotion of Dr. Spadafora, who went above and beyond as the sole permanent oncologist in the program over these many months.”

SAH also wishes to acknowledge and thank our partners at HSNRCP for their support and the compassionate care they’ve given to our patients over the past year, particularly Dr. Jonathan Noble and Mr. Mark Hartman for their ongoing commitment to our program.
