SAULT STE. MARIE MUSEUM

****************************
May I Have This Dance - The Sault Ste. Marie Museum will present an exhibit from July 1 to October 26, 2013

May I Have This Dance is remembering a time gone by - the dance halls and bands from the early 1900s to the 1980s.

The exhibit features a variety of musical instruments, some from the museum's collection and others generously loaned from Northland Music, Music Depot, Case's Music and Algoma Instrumental Repair.

There are photos of early bands playing at the Boat Club Pavilion and the Palm Gardens.

Do you remember dancing at the dance halls or the local hotel like the Royal and Windsor Hotels? Who was your favourite local band?

"Music has played an important role in the social fabric of our community since the early days of settlement," says curator Kim Forbes.

"It has changed in style but it still exists in many forms today and will continue well into the future," Forbes continued.

In addition there will be sheet music of songs written about the Sault, records of local performing artists, dance cards and a video presentation featuring local musicians and a historic retrospective of music in Sault Ste. Marie.
