Unsightly scenes: Sunnyside Beach Road (5 photos)

Monday, June 17, 2013   by: SooToday.com Staff

Loyal reader Ruth Tonon has sent us the photos shown and the following.

"This is a collection of photos taken along Sunnyside Beach Road in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. This road was originally built by Borden Avery and my Dad Louis was employed by Avery's at that time, circa 1950s '60s. We are so fortunate to have our little paradise at 405 Sunnyside Beach Road and we enjoy spectacular sunsets year-round. Sunnyside Beach is located on the St. Mary's River, a Heritage River, flowing from Lake Superior just west of us.

"The marshland on the opposite side of the road became protected Conservation Land and was named Shore Ridges Wetland. Although there are a multitude of laws in place to protect wetland, they are all but ignored by some residents of Sunnyside Beach Road. The long-standing practice of dumping yard waste has been accelerated by newer residents to include the dumping of construction waste of every description.

"These photos tell a story of ignorance and a profound sense of entitlement by some residents as they continue to build bridges across City-owned drainage ditches to the wetland and City-owned land to dump what they don't want to deal with on their own property. All of these photos have been shared with the City of SSMarie, the Sault Area Conservation Authority and the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Sault."

that' s not a problem . once they get their subdivision they will just pave that over. taxes over trash all the time.
zedicus 6/17/2013 8:42:29 PM Report

i will come and get the wood and blocks. it will clean some of it up :)
PunkBob 6/17/2013 9:35:18 PM Report

Call mmr, they are supposed to be the ones "protecting the wetlands" Explain the problem and the location, and people do this. Also illegal dumping could be brought to attention of the SSM Police, regardless this needs to be cleaned up. It's sad you have to shame the City into actually doing something.

So sad, really this has always been a beautiful area and unfortunately as areas grow and new people move in, they don't care or respect what has been a treasure to many people for years. Hopefully the right organizations will come forward and make these people accountable and clean up the mess they have created and fined.

Im guessing their taxes are so high out there, they can't afford the dump fees :)
nascarnutt 6/17/2013 10:17:29 PM Report

Joe Fratesi lives right there. Maybe he is not paying himself enough to make sure the proper authorities are aware of this?
Gater 6/17/2013 10:18:06 PM Report

Call the MNR say what!!
Maybe in the past .Now no one answers the phone and the doors are locked at the Sault office. All part of the /new improved customer service plan?
It is a shame .That is a beautiful place out there.

Goes to show slobs are slobs, regardless of income bracket. Bet their yards look pretty, though.

Joe Fratesi lives right there. Maybe he is not paying himself enough to make sure the proper authorities are aware of this? He is concerned about the speed limit there, because he had a speed limit sign of MAX 30/kmh made. You can surely tell it is NOT a provincial or city speed limit sign.

Sadly this is happening all over the city. People have no respect for other property. I can bet that their property looks great!

LOLOL!! Pure gold! I think we should make a meme out of that. Thanks for the best laugh I've had all week.

That says it all!!!!!
mn98 6/18/2013 1:50:14 AM Report

why would homeowners, or owners of brand new homes have all this construction material still? have you met some of these contractors in town?? in my experience, im guessing some, probably not all, is left behind from when the homes were built. get in, get out, make a lot of cash! theres more contractors in this town then cops! (though probably the same amount of crooked.... oops, i should probably stop right there lol)
bounder 6/18/2013 7:04:32 AM Report

Nothing wrong there all works in progress, give them a chance to do it.
Ohwow 6/18/2013 7:55:25 AM Report

I do have to say that pile of gravel and that little bridge didn't seem like too big of an eye sore..
You only took four pictures. I understand where you are coming from and I agree! All I'm saying is; make a better argument..

Someone bored and wanted to try out their new camera?
soodood 6/18/2013 8:19:12 AM Report

Who dumps off cut and split fire wood and stacks it?
Stugatzu 6/18/2013 12:19:14 PM Report

There's still snow out on Sunnyside? I didn't think so....
sAUCEY 6/18/2013 1:56:26 PM Report

I know majority of the bridges built around there are for old motorcross trails. We used to ride our dirt bikes around there and there used to be trails to get us to the airport for the old strips but now its all closed down

:(
Baron 6/18/2013 4:30:47 PM Report

All I can think of is some frustrated person from south of Parry Sound has nothing better to do. She is peeved at her neighbors for not agreeing with her neighbor. Her own lot needs a little bit of work.
LSARC 6/18/2013 7:56:19 PM Report

Then there is lovely little Creek Road...and people are dumping into a water course there too.

And what is with the tires? Is there not a local company trying to find a supply to incinerate?
