Passport To Unity: May 3-5, 2013!

Passport To Unity 2013, version 7.0 is upon us.

Hard to believe we are celebrating the seventh year of the festival.

From humble beginnings in the White Pines gymnasium to now a three day event, with the highlight being fun for everyone at the Essar Centre.

This year the New To The Sault team is partnering with ADSB and HSCSB to deliver workshops to 10 schools around the city, focusing on creating a welcoming community within the school and classroom.

This is a major expansion from the presentations from last year, and we are all very excited to have this as lead into the weekend of May 4 and 5.

On Saturday, May 4, we will be hosting an exhibition cricket match at the West End Community Centre.

Cricket is a sport played throughout the world, and in Sault Ste. Marie we have seen the odd match played at Bellevue Park.

A committed group of people have come together to begin building a Sault Ste. Marie Cricket Club, and we are so thrilled to help shine the spotlight on them and the sport of cricket.

If you are interested in seeing how the sport is played, or if you want to try it out please come along.

It will be at the West End Community Centre on Saturday, May 4 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Sunday May 5, the crown jewel ... Essar Centre ... 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.,18 food vendors, 50 arts and information vendors, food challenges, entertainment, children’s activities.

This is what Passport To Unity has become known for.

Sticking to the formula that people like while adding in new elements to keep things fresh, there is something for everyone.

Come and kick your feet, sit a while, people watch, and rest a while at the Coffee Corner.

Step inside Speaker’s Corner and let us know about your experience at Passport To Unity or anything else you have on your mind.

Test your knowledge of foods from around the world at the Food Challenges held throughout the day.

Take a walk through the past 100 years of immigration to the city of Sault Ste. Marie and see the many different cultures that have given so much over the years.

And these are just a few of the options awaiting you at the Essar Centre on Sunday, May 5.

We would love to see you there.

The importance of acceptance, celebration, learning, and inclusion of all cultures has never been higher on the agenda than it is today.

Resolutions passed by city council, and a proclamation made by Mayor Amaroso declaring the week of April 28 - May 4 as Diversity Week, encouraging all members of the community to embrace difference of cultures, while highlighting the important role Passport To Unity plays in all of this – all of this makes version 7.0 of the festival the most important yet.

Join us in celebrating diversity, accepting differences, open yourself to learn one new thing, and enjoy what is truly a community festival that couldn’t work without the support of the community.
