Hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, the non-televised Juno Awards were presented this evening during a gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Credit Union Eventplex in Regina, Saskatchewan.
As reported by SooToday.com in February of this year, Sault metal band Woods of Ypres received a nomination for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year.
Formerly fronted by Saultite Dave Gold (pictured) who died tragically in December 2011, Woods of Ypres was given the Juno nod for Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light released by Earache Records.
Just before 9 p.m. this evening, it was announced that Woods of Ypres in fact won the Juno Award, beating out the Cancer Bats, Castle, Devin Townsend Project, and Ex Deo.
Twitter reports indicate that Gold's mother Esther, who was present at the awards ceremony, offered a touching tribute to her son.
"Here's a proud mom: throwing horns at the Junos. This is both metal and heartbreaking," @YoDessa tweeted.
CTV will broadcast the remaining Juno Awards tomorrow night (Sunday, April 21) starting at 8 p.m. with host Michael Buble.
